Kantha, West Bengal

The traditional folk art is one of the oldest forms of embroidery that originated in India. Its origins can be traced back to the ancient pre-Vedic ages. Motifs found in early Kantha embroidery include many symbols that were derived from ancient art. These symbols depict nature, such as the sun, the tree of life and the universe.

For centuries, the techniques of the hereditary craft have been passed down from mothers to daughters.

Kantha comprises the simplest stitch in the language of embroidery – the running stitch. It is the way in which this stitch is used, in different arrangements, that forms the complex vocabulary of kantha.
